The theme for this event is Pasta Mafia, and all the staff came dressed up to the theme. It was an exciting event as staff from outlets all across the island were given time off to prepare and turned up in their best.

The evening started with a very motivating speech from the CEO, sharing the vision of the company and achievements in 2011. The Long Service Awards was next up, as deserving individuals whom have contributed consistently and diligently were recognized by the company. Apart from the long service awards, the company presented awards to staff and outlets with best performance and encouraged others to achieve better results this year.

When the announcement for free flow started, everyone cheered and headed to the bar counters and got their rounds. As always, you cannot go wrong with music and drinks. After dinner, the emcee started some games contests and that got everyone cheering and clapping for their representatives on stage.

The organizers planned a special birthday surprise for a staff whose birthday falls on the actual day. It was a real sweet surprise for her and all the staff joined in the birthday song led by the emcee. When the time came for the dance floor to be opened, everyone poured onto the dance floor and some came onto the stage, showing their moves and gyrating to the beats.

After a dance segment, the emcee came on stage to conduct the lucky draw. Audience eagerly took out their invitation cards and waited for their numbers to be called. Top 10 prizes were presented on stage, and the remaining 190 prizes were pre-drawn.

Everyone continued dancing and just before the clock struck 12, Those whom did not win earlier were treated to another round of special draw as a surprise. It was a great way to top off the event on a high note!

Bandar Seri Begawan - Locally established company, Malar Setia Sdn Bhd celebrated its 25 years of establishment and for lucky customer David Bong and staff member Lim Sei Hong it was a celebration of their lifetime as they respectively drove home a KIA RIO 1.4 EX (A) 4-Door Sedan and a KIA RIO 1.4 EX (A) 5-Door Hatchback.

The duo were picked as the top three grand finalists in the Customer and Long Service Staff lucky draw categories and their lucky stars shone further when they picked the correct keys to the door of the grand prize winning car.

Meanwhile, the other two finalists in both categories did not go home empty handed as they each won themselves an iPhone 4S 16GB.

The prizes were presented by CEO of HSBC Mr Vincent Ho and Mr Hj Saiful Rizal Pehin Dato Dr Hj Ahmad in the customer and staff categories, respectively.

The night of colourful celebration that took place at The Empire Hotel and Country Club in Jerudong, Saturday. It began with a doa selamat by Hj Mohd Ali Hj Timbang Al-Hafiz and an opening address by the company's Managing Partner Awg Hj Abd Rahman Hj Metasim.

Awg Hj Abd Rahman then represented the company to present cash donations of $2,500 each to charity associations, Pusat Ehsan Al-Ameerah Al-Hajjah Maryam and Persatuan Kanak-Kanak Cacat (KACA).

On hand to represent Pusat Ehsan was Dato Dr Hj Omar Khalid while KACA was represented by Dato Paduka Hj Zainal Hj Mumin.

Also receiving a similar amount in donations were Chung Hwa Middle School, Chung Hua Middle School, KB, Chung Ching Middle School, Chung Hwa School, Tutong, Chung Lian School, Sungai Liang, Chung Hwa School, Kiudang, Pai Yuek School, Temburong and Yu Feng Tang.

The colourful evening then proceeded with the presentation of Long Service Awards to its staff members where presenting the 5-9 years Long Service Award was Malar Setia Partner Mr Lim Thian Huat.

Meanwhile the 10-25 Years Long Service Award was presented by Managing Director Mr Lim Chin Lam.

Following these presentations invited emcee from Singapore, Richard Siaw made the night's opening performance along with a Modern Dance number and was later joined on stage by local emcee who is no stranger to the entertainment industry, Jenny Malai Ali.

Adding more colour to the stage and enlivening the night were performances by John Hiew, Harun Aziz and Pei Pei as well as staff performances.

Apart from the Grand Prize draw, guests, customers as well as suppliers and staff members present also had their chances in the celebration's lucky draw where lucky numbers picked saw them winning attractive prizes for the winners.

Other guests present at the event were Mr Ti Eng Hui of Baiduri Bank, Mr Javed Ahmad of BIBD, Mr Mohd Hassanel Jarai of Maybank and Mr Abdul Razak Abd Malek of United Overseas Bank.

JAC Recruitment 25th Anniversary Celebrations

A joyous occasion for all the staff from various locations around the globe, as they gather to commemorate the 25th anniversary of JAC Recruitment. From a humble beginning, today JAC Recruitment is one of the most successful and well-established international recruitment consultancies in the world.


The evening started with grandeur, as the Managing Director and CFO welcome and congratulated everyone, attributing the success to the staff's hard work and dedication. Awards were presented for excellent performance as well as dedicated long service and contribution to the company.

Among the highlights of the evening was an excellent flamingo dance performance put up by the staff (Mr Konno). His sharp and precise dance moves, accompanied by the nifty footwork and rhythmic tap dancing, left the audience asking for more the moment he completed. It was totally exhilarating even as I watched from the side of the stage.

Another great highlight was a staff whom was caught up on stage by me, stood on the chair and candidly gestured his love to another colleague. At the request of the audience, he sang the song "The Moon Represents My Heart" with great passion and that was such a sweet moment for all in the ballroom. (It was a light-hearted jovial moment too!)

The night went on with many great joyous moments and highlights and everyone had a wonderful time. This 25th Anniversary will certainly be a memorable one for many in the years to come!

Pacific International Lines 45th Anniversary Celebration

It was a night for the 550 staff to let their hair down, have fun and commemorate the 45th anniversary of the company. Many of the staff have dedicated their service to the company and grew along with the company over the years. At the Long Service Award presentation, there were several individuals receiving the 40 years long service award. Impressive!

Throughout the night, the most impressive and touching moment was the entire ballroom stood up and applauded continuously as the chairman came onto the stage to deliver the address. I could sense the respect and reverence for the chairman whom built the company over the last 45 years.

As it was a night for the staff, there were stage and floor games to engage everyone among the audience. The spirit was extremely high and audience rushed onto the stage to take part in the games.











2012 Global Outlook Investment Forum (Shanghai)

I was invited to host and deliver a speech at this 2012 Global Outlook Investment Forum organized by one of the banks in Singapore for their offshore clients. The last time I hosted in Shanghai was in 2006-2007, followed by Beijing in 2009. Shanghai has changed quite a bit since my last visit.

Taking the time in between the preparation and the actual day of the forum, the only place I visited was the Bund. The overall look and feel have improved a lot and it is so well developed. I loved it there. As I was putting up beside Nanjing Pesdestrian Mall (南京步行街), I also leisurely took a stroll down the mall. It is a whole new different feeling. It feels so much more metropolitan now as compared to the first time I visited in 2002.

I have enjoyed my Shanghai trip very much this time and most importantly am glad that the forum went well with applause for the well-crafted speech. Looking forward to my next overseas event in April.

DSO Amazing Race Teambuilding

150 staff participated in this morning's teambuilding event. Similar to the Amazing Race television series, 15 teams raced across the western and central part of Singapore to complete a series of stations and challenges. Starting at Kent Ridge Park (just behind DSO), I commenced the event with a roaring welcome to all the participants and led a series of "energizers" activities to lift the morning dullness out of everyone. The participants moved readily into groups and their first challenge was to think of a team name. An interesting team name caught my attention. This group called themselves "MAO" - Moving As One.

The race was flagged off and all participants went on their way. We were greeted with slight drizzle, but that did not dampen everyone's spirit. And thankfully, the rain cleared and it was fine weather throughout the morning. Moving from stations to stations, taking on challenges, solving quizes and hints to their next destination, everyone contributed in any way that they could. Not forgetting, the laughters and cheers that rode alongside each group.

The final destination of the race was at Fort Canning Centre. Getting ready with the event organizers, as the teams came rolling in, I greeted and congratulated each team for having completed the challenges. Sumptuous lunch buffet spread was prepared for everyone for the job well done!

Scores were tabulated and teams waited eagerly for their results. I led everyone with some additional energizers by beating and drumming on the drums provided. That totally lifted their spirits even higher for the afternoon's activities organized by Drum Cafe (http://www.drumcafe.com/). The results were announced and elated winners came forward to claim their prized trophies, not forgetting the group photography of course!

Sysmex Asia Overseas Teambuilding (Bangkok, Thailand)

This year started off with my first overseas team-building event in Bangkok, Thailand, along with 60 local and regional participants.

Discussions on the objectives of the team-building as well as suggestions on activities to deliver these learning values started several weeks ago. With a clear understanding of the high level and individual deliverables needed by the client, I went back to my drawing board and started toying with various team-building ideas. (I knew I wanted to break away from the traditional team-building activities and innovate a whole new paradigm to team-building.)

In traditional team-building activities, groups are given tasks/ challenges to complete within a specific time. The winning criteria is often based on speed, accuracy, timing, etc. However, in my new format of team-building, teams compete real time and make strategic decisions based on both prior outcomes as well as the decision of the other competing teams. The intent is to allow participants from various departments to understand the importance of building a lean and flexible organization, constantly tuned into the marketplace and seeking ways to outdo the competition. 

Most often, as companies grow, they tend to lose touch with the external marketplace (environment) and turn their focus inwards, a clear example of by which every department is narrowly focused on managing their respective key performance indicators, resources and workload. The most often feedback heard from management is about a lack of ownership and initiative from staff. Successful managers are aware of the need to provide a clear sense of direction across the organisation, by sharing where we are today, where our goal is, how do we get there and what are the pitfalls and competing forces against us. 

As such, the team-building activities were specially tailored to simulate firms competing in the marketplace - As every department gets caught up in the day to day routine tasks, they have to keep the big picture in mind and change their direction and decision based on what happened in the marketplace. These activities are intellectually stimulating and mentally challenging, keeping the participants charged up by incorporating interim minor successes, ultimately culminating into moving them towards the finishing line.

The event was a great success and every participant had a wonderful time of learning and sharing.

Sin Hin Hang Chinese New Year Celebration 2012

Today is the fifteen day of the Lunar New Year and commonly known as "元宵节" (yuan xiao jie). It is also said that this day is the Chinese Valentine's day.

I was invited to host this annual event for the company staff on their company premises. I have always had enjoyable experiences hosting on site within the company grounds. It can also be very challenging as compared to a hotel ballroom, where factors such as stage, lighting, sound and layout have been carefully managed.

The event tonight was held in a sheltered open area within the company's warehouse. The staff arrived immediately after work and everyone settled in very fast. This is the beauty of having it on site. Staff will almost always arrive on time!

We commenced the event with the traditional Chinese New Year customary practice of the "Lo Hei" followed by a sumptuous buffet spread. While the dinner went on, I started some ice-breakers and warmed up the audience. We played some games and discovered the hidden talents among the company! Hahaha...

Not forgetting the lucky draw, the management decided that everyone has to be a winner. Prizes were prepared for everyone with an additional round of grand lucky draw with 12 top prizes.

Far East Organization: Chinese New Year Celebrations

The wonderful people at Far East Organization brought the Chinese New Year celebrations to the door step of the residents at Leonie Condotel and Nassim Regency. Residents and guests were invited to this wonderful celebration, filled with exciting Lion Dance performance, Chinese calligraphy, sumptuous delicacies and lots of fun and games for the little ones.

During the event, there was an art piece that caught by attention and everyone was highly impressed. The children were tasked to create a picture of anything related to the Chinese New Year using various parts of the mandarin oranges. Here's the genius creativity by a little girl (I simply adore her!)...

Facility Link Chinese New Year Dinner 2012

The evening started with everyone at Facility Link nominating the most good-looking colleague that they have. It was just so much fun when people started nominating whom they thought was the most handsome among them!

The dinner commenced with the Chinese "Lo Hei", a custom practised by every company as part of the Chinese New Year celebration. The tossing and churning of the ingredients by everyone with their chopsticks and words of blessings that accompanied certainly added to the atmosphere. Among different races, nationalities, culture and background, everyone enjoyed this particular dish.

I rolled off the first game looking for the God of Fortune among the audience and yes, we found him - with a EZ-link card, some dollar bills among a variety of items! We all had a good laugh to see the lucky person to be the God of Fortune for the company!

More games went on and the participation from the audience was both intense and pulse-racing. The best moment that ended the night on a high - was a great sexy hip dance by the staff and management!

Colgate Palmolive Dinner 2012

The event was organized as a highlight to a 1-day meeting for the staff of Colgate as well as the upcoming Chinese New Year.

The evening began with an introduction and light-hearted jokes to warm everyone up after a full day of meeting. It was especially nice, since everyone knew each other and felt a lot more like a family gathering than a corporate function. Through my interactions with some, it lightened up the evening and got everything started on the right foot.

The Chinese "Yu Shen" or "Lo Hei" is customarily the first course as Chinese New Year is round the corner. In any restaurant. the waiter would garnish the dish with various ingredients, each representing a different blessing in the Chinese language. As I went through the list of blessings, the waiters poured the ingredients, and everyone was ready to tuck in and toss for better luck and blessings in the new year.

"Huat ah... Huat ah... Huat ah... "

The evening continued on with fun and games. There were mass games, table games and stage games and everyone participated happily, brightening the ballroom even further with laughter and applause. Thanks to one of the guest, Kelvin, who happened to be my classmate from secondary school, here are the photos that he took. I made it into a collage!


A big thank you to all the staff. You guys were great and I had a good time!

As the Chinese New Year is around the corner, most Chinese families in Singapore starts preparing for the brand new year - Year of the Dragon. Spring cleaning is always the time to get rid of old stuff to make way for new items, from clothings to furnitures and electronic appliances.

Courts launched a 2 days Chinese New Year Special at their spanking new branch at Clementi central. I was arranged to be the emcee for the roadshow and had a great time interacting with the shoppers and enticed them with BIG discounts!!

Abbott Sales Kickoff cum X-Factor Talent Search 2012

This is one of my all-time favourite hotels in Singapore! The swimming pool, the sea breeze, the outdoor dinner and the excellent view from the hotel – all these make it a great staycation getaway!

One of the key highlight of the 2-day Sales Kickoff is our very own Abbott X-factor Talent Search! All 5 participating teams spent hours choreographing and practising their performance, all ready for a showdown and walk away with the grand prize worth more than $2000!

Here's the line-up of all 5 teams:
  1. The A Team
  2. Fab 5
  3. Sassy Six
  4. Esprit de Corps
  5. Prestique

Apart from judging criteria such as Entertainment and Creativity, all 5 teams had to showcase the company's values – Pioneering, Achieving, Caring and Enduring - through their performance. There were song and dance, skit, musicals, and Abbott's very own midget show! From their performances, dance routines, costumes, props and music arrangement, we could see all 5 teams contributed significant hours after work to put everything together, over and above their work and sales commitments! IMPRESSIVE!

Apart from the talent search performances, we had lots of good fun in the games segments. It was very heartwarming as an emcee to see everyone contributing in and giving suggestions and encouragement. Excellent teamwork and great spirit was displayed by every member of the company.

Another highlight of the event was the awards and prize presentation. The company recognized the hardwork and contribution by the awardees and presented awards and prizes to these deserving individuals.

"And this year 2012 X-Factor Talent Search champion goes to ... ... Prestique!"

Requests were made for the champion and first runner-up to perform once more and the crowd went wild! Well guess what happened after the 2 performances? We had our very own impromptu Indian Dance Superstar!

Finally to round up the event, we had a special guest whom were specially invited and all the staff participated in making a gift for this special guest!

Char Yong (Dabu) Association 2012 Countdown Party

Happy New Year Everyone!! 祝大家新年快乐,青春美丽,笑口常开!


In my opinion, this is certainly the best countdown party to be at this year. Why? For 2 good reasons:

  • My dialect group is Hakka and the home town where my grandparents were from Dapu County
  • The crowd was awesome, from 8 - 80 years old, they laughed together, played games on stage, and best of all? They were going around the ballroom with my countdown choo-choo train too!

The theme for the evening was "Movies Night". The decor was beautifully done up, with posters decorating the foyer, kacang putih (white sugar coated peanuts) seller and a olden days ticket booth. Best of all, the organizers replicated the old movie stubs. For those who were born 1980s and before, the old movie stubs were nothing more than a flimsy piece of paper and the seat numbers were scribbled using colored pencil. Ushers would use a torch and usher you to your seat. (If you recall, sitting at the last few rows, you could hear the projector and the reel rolling sound coming out of the projection room above!)

The event started with a spoof version of pre-event movie trailers. It was hilarious as many were dubbed in Hakka language. The audience had a good laughed (even I was chuckling away)! It was nostalgic, especially for many of the folks among the audience. The president of the association delivered the opening and dinner commenced. Oh gosh, we were all famished!

Moments later, Captain Jack Sparrow (which was the character I took on), jumped onto the stage and kick started our fun and entertainment with simple light-hearted ice-breakers to get everyone warmed up. It was so fun when everyone, of all ages, put their heads together, to solve the Hakka Challenge!!

As an entertainer, I would always use games to encourage participation, regardless of race, language, age, nationality, or corporate hierarchy. To me, games and entertainment bring people together and spice up our daily lives.

As the evening went on, we had more fun and entertainment. We had a lovely showcase of wonderful singers, from mandarin pop songs to hakka hits. And we even had our very own Hakka Rapper! The final game that we played before the countdown was to select couples (dressed to the theme) on stage and re-enact the movie scenes. It was simply hilarious!!

With fun and laughter, good company, food and drinks, time flew so quickly that it was time to start our countdown. Everyone was distributed party hats, poppers, confetti guns and various party props to get ready for 2012.

10... 9... 8... 7... 6... 5... 4... 3... 2... 1
