Conference in US with Snowstorm, Icy Rain, Fallen Trees and Power Outages

Event: Industry Conference in US
Date: February 2014
Venue: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States

Having pretty much lived in Singapore all my life, with a couple of years in China, this experience was nothing short of deep and memorable. Snowstorm, icy rain, fallen trees and power outages were not written in my autobiography until last week.

I left Singapore for New York on the second day of the Lunar New Year, a time where families, relatives and friends get together for sumptuous feast and celebration. The flight SQ26 took more than 24hours with a short transit at Frankfurt. Upon arrival at New York John F Kennedy Airport, we had to travel in a car for another two hours. Weather was cold but sunny (wishful thinking on my part that the weather will stay this way).

What transpired over the next three days was an experience of a lifetime. Snow came down fast and flurry on my second day in the US. Started in the morning and I thought it was beautiful (bear in mind I am living near the equator). Over the next few hours, snow accumulated and roads and schools were closed. Our car couldn't leave the hotel carpark as the entrance was piled with snow. We were pretty much welled up in the hotel the whole day.

Snowstorm cleared and next day we had the first day of the conference. Everything went fine and conference participants had a fruitful day. At night, it started raining with ice forming. Next morning, the conference venue and many other offices, homes and shops were down without power. Families in homes were stranded without heater and started checking into hotels. The conference was cancelled.

I was worried about my flight out the next day as I have to arrive in Singapore by Saturday without fail, to host an event in the evening. My flight was scheduled to arrive on Saturday morning and any delay would jeopardize my hosting engagement that evening. Luckily the weather cleared and we departed US. At this point, I am safe and sound back in Singapore. It's showtime this evening!

Some photos of the snowstorm to share:

DeClout Annual Dinner 2014

Event: DeClout Annual Dinner and Dance 2014
Date: January 2014
Venue: Raffles Hotel, Singapore

Tonight is a show that I would remember for a long long time. It was spectacular, amazing and totally out of the world! Not me, but the staff of DeClout!

Given that the Lunar New Year celebration is round the corner, tonight we celebrated the festive season with the tossing of the Yu Sheng (my foreign visitors call it the Chinese salad!). The highlight of the evening that was totally memorable, for me as an emcee, was to witness with my very own eyes, the talents within DeClout. The company organized a talent time to showcase their very own talents. There were auditions and the 6 finalists had the chance to pit their talents live on stage. It was amazing to see the level of competency and professionalism that the talents had! The audience were cheering and clapping after each and every outstanding performance. It felt like the Lunar New Year show on TV. Totally awesome!

I totally enjoyed myself and I am delighted to be the emcee for the event. Here's wishing each and everyone (including the readers of my blog) a Happy and Prosperous Year of the Horse! May all your dreams come true!

"Richard is one of the best emcees that I have worked with. He's not only easy to work with, his energy and quick thinking wit is second to none. His ability to liven up an event and connect with the audience is impressive. Add his stage presence into the equation and you have one of the most versatile and natural emcees in the industry. I will strongly recommend Richard for any big hosting gigs that you are planning."

Holiday Inn Annual Dinner and Dance 2014

Event: Holiday Inn Annual Dinner and Dance 2014
Date: January 2014
Venue: Holiday Inn Atrium

The theme this evening was "Cosplay", a fun but and unique theme as compared to the usual Hawaiian, Shanghai, or Movies theme night. I would love to see more interesting and wacky themes for future thematic dinner events?

Being a big fan of Japanese anime and manga, where I grew up with Slam Dunk, Doraemon, Gundam, and Sailor Moon; its time to shed the old and embrace the new. Guess what? I decided to adopt the character from the current most popular anime and manga. Not Naruto, but it's Attack on Titans!

Tonight is a plethora everything you can ever imagine, with characters from fairy tales to horror, superheroes and all! Not only that, a line up of exciting fun items for the evening awaits each and every staff.

There was a department performance contest and 5 departments took part and dazzled the judges away with their creativity, energy and entertainment. We saw Despicable Me, Para Para Sakura, Rihanna mashup, and many more!

I had a great evening entertaining the audience with jokes and games and got everyone rocking the house down with a massive mass dance.

Ladies and gentlemen, presenting to you your host this evening... Richard Style!

Cindy and Wilson Wedding Celebration

Event: Cindy and Wilson Wedding Celebration
Date: January 2014
Venue: Four Seasons Hotel, Singapore

Ladies and Gentlemen, presenting to you the newly wed, Cindy and Wilson..
.
A Wedding Celebration is about sharing this special occasion with the people and loved ones whom are significant in our lives. Before the wedding celebration, months and months of preparation for this special day. But think about it again. Even before the preparation phase, it is a culmination of years and years of getting to know each other. Some may take a shorter period, some may be longer. Whatever the case is, this is just the beginning of a whole new chapter together. Not about YOU or ME, but about US.

And as the chosen wedding emcee (probably the only person to stand on the stage besides the couple), I am obligated to make this special day memorable. Not just for today, but even long after you both have added loving years to your marriage. This is what my mission is. Not about making a fool of the couple on stage, but to impress upon the guests of their significance in the couple's lives and to express gratitude and thanks for their presence.

This is me, the wedding emcee.

Vision One and Wanco Electric Annual Dinner 2014

Event: Vision One and Wanco Electric Annual Dinner 2014
Date: January 2014
Venue: Bukit Batok Civil Service Club

This evening I had lots of fun, entertaining the audience from Vision One at their annual dinner event. The audience were very spontaneous and ready to party. After a year of hard work, it is time to let their hair down and reward themselves with a good dinner and some fun!

At the event, we had karaoke facilities for the staff to enjoy themselves. Usually at the start everyone will be rather shy to take the lead to come forward and sing. But once the energy and momentum got started, it was so enjoyable to watch the talented staff singing on stage!

There was some games and entertainment for the night as well and not to forget, always a crowd puller, the lucky draw!

Here's wishing the staff and management of Vision One a prosperous and successful new year!

HDB Senja Green Welcome Party

Event: HDB Senja Green Welcome Party
Date: January 2014
Venue: Senja Green

The welcome party for the residents of Senja Green was organized to provide a platform for the residents to get to know their neighbours, grassroots leaders and to promote bonding among the neighbourhood.

As it was held in the late morning, residents strolled into the venue in a relaxed manner, together with their family. Everyone was smiling and chatting, as the organizing committee and myself greeted and welcomed each and everyone of them. It is always a nice to have the chance to mingle and get to know your neighbour better through get-together events. With everyone busy in their own daily lives, sometimes we may not even realized that our next door neighbour son has grown up!

At the event, the residents could engage themselves in so many different activities. We had performances, stage fun and games, gifts, and our very own Senja Green Fun Quest where participants have to complete as many tasks as possible within 40 minutes! We had Joseph, the Explorer Joe, who is a ventriloquist and got the audience all glued to his show. It was fun watching!

Here's wishing all Senja Green residents and their families a blessed and prosperous Happy New Year!

Hiap Hoe and Superbowl Group Annual Dinner 2014

Event: Hiap Hoe and Superbowl Group Annual Dinner 2014
Date: January 2014
Venue: Ramada Hotel Singapore

It's the start of a brand new year! Let's toast to a great year for everyone!

This evening, I am delighted to be invited as the emcee for the event. As an emcee, I am honoured whenever the organizing committee decides to engage me as the emcee for their event. Whether for 80 to 800 guests, I will always put in my best, not only to make the event as enjoyable as possible for the guests, but also to make it flawless and perfect for the organizing committee. After all, the organizing committee is also part of the guest entourage and should enjoy themselves too!

We had a good fun time this evening, entertained both by myself and the staff whom came on the stage to participate in the games. I think it's always fun to see your colleagues in action, whether in competitive stage games or dancing and performing on stage. After all, winning or losing is not important, but most importantly is that everyone enjoys themselves.

A big thank you to Hiap Hoe and Superbowl Group for selecting me as their emcee this year!

There's a huge table prize to be won for everyone on your table if you get the answers correct!" Everyone got excited and got to work quickly to solve the puzzle and came up to me with the answers.

Apart from fun and games, we had some great performances from the staff. These guys were good! They got the crowd cheering and clapping for them as they gave their best on the stage. Comedy Dim Sum show and Dessert Rose Bellydance got everyone laughing even louder!

Have you heard the song before... Make in India, Make in India??

Yes, my friend, that's right. The theme this evening was Bollywood. Flowers, colours, music, mass dancing and having lots of fun with over 500 staff. The evening started and everyone was streaming into the ballroom, dressed in all sort of colors and motifs. I thought to myself, "Oh, this is awesome!"

After dinner, we did some fun and games on stage. How can one not have some Bollywood dancing around coconut trees, with changing light bulbs and mopping the table hand actions to go along? The staff were spontaneous and participated in the game, bringing great photo moments as well as laughter to the audience. We had Bellydance performance and comedy Dim Sum show (by Lay Cheng) to add to the laughter!

Happy New Year my friends!

The theme this evening was Saturday Night Fever. Since it was on a Saturday, this theme fits exactly! We started this evening with an award presentation and a quick ice-breaker before dinner. Magician Jeremy Tan dazzled the audience and children with magic performance and some mind reading as well.

After the magic show, there was a special appearance by the cast from the movie "The Lion Men" - Wang Weiliang, Tosh Zhang, Noah Yap, Charlie Goh and Maxi Lim. We started off the evening with classic hawker fare - laksa, kueh pie ti, kuih-muih, roti prata and my favourite kacang putih. There was also a trishaw in place for the instant photo taking. Awesome set up to start off the evening.

The show started with a A-go-go opening dance followed by a short ice-breaker game. We moved into dinner and everyone was enjoying the food and drinks prepared by Yan Palace. We had some good fun games and started off with a short disco session. Professional entertainer Suzie Wong delivered a rendition of old songs which was very well received.

Total Oil Asia Pacific Annual Dinner and Dance 2013

Event: Total Oil Asia Pacific Annual Dinner and Dance 2013
Date: December 2013
Venue: O'Learys Sportsbar & Grill @Singapore Flyer, Singapore

Tonight's dinner for Total has a very special meaning as the organising committee decided to incorporate corporate social responsibility (CSR) elements into the program. As part of the fundraising efforts by Total, the staff has raised a total of $3,000 which will be matched by the company dollar for dollar to a total of $6,000! The beneficiary, Club Rainbow, was invited, along with 6 families to be part of this annual celebration. I am very honoured to be hosting this event for Total. Everyone was treated to a great opening percussion performance by a team of hearing impaired performers.

Hearing-impaired performers giving their best percussion performance. Awesome!

To kick off the fun and games on stage, the committee decided to do the Best Dressed along with participants from Club Rainbow and Total staff. Everyone had to do a short performance and we were fortunate to have a Zumba performance by two staff whom were Zumba enthusiast. One of the Club Rainbow participant did a catwalk and received thunderous applause and support from the audience! After that, we had more fun and games and I had a good time interacting and sharing humour with each and every staff. We danced, we sang, we laughed. It was all in good spirit and everyone enjoyed it!

The outgoing recreation committee (RC 2013) presented a slide show of the full year's events as a round up and appreciation of the committee's efforts. They invited and handed over the baton to the incoming recreation committee (RC 2014).

We did a finale toast and wished everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Sambo E&C Co Annual Dinner 2013

Event: Sambo E&C Co Annual Dinner2013
Date: December 2013
Venue: Sambo Innovation Building, Singapore

I am delighted to be engaged as the host for this evening, where the management and employees of Sambo got together for an annual dinner celebration at their own building along Jalan Tukang, Singapore. The building is spanking new and the function room was large enough to accommodate 250 guests, with stage, 2 projector screens and 2 buffet lines. The korean, foreign and local employees were all very courteous and friendly. I like their culture!

Employees from the various work sites around Singapore started arriving in groups at about 6pm. The registration was smooth and everyone got comfortable, relaxing and chatting while waiting for the event to begin. After the welcome speech by the managing director, he presented awards for outstanding performance to 20 individual employees.

Dinner commence and after dinner, some stage fun and games commenced. All the audience were separated into several groups where each had a leader up on stage. The leaders had special tasks that they had to complete and everyone was laughing away at the same time cheering their leaders.

After a few games, we were all eagerly looking forward to Fire Illusionist Danny Koh and his captivating performance. He wowed the audience with a myriad of tricks and fire stunts that earned him huge rounds of applause. Lucky draw followed and the evening rounded up with everyone doing 3 cheers to korean wi ha yo!

Japan Tobacco International Annual Dinner and Dance 2013

Event: Japan Tobacco International Annual Dinner and Dance 2013
Date: December 2013
Venue: 1-Altitude, One Raffles Place, Singapore

Tonight's theme is Neon Night, a unique and interesting theme for dinner and dance corporate events. I spent a week sourcing for stage outfit suited to the theme. Finally, I settled with making my very own neon light outfit. What I did was to (use 2-4 metres EL lights) of various colours and very thin fishing line to sew the neon EL lights to my outfit.

The event started with an opening speech by the general manager and a time of recognizing various employees for their long service with the company. The first performance was a comedy showtime known as the Kiki and Ms Mole show. The crowd enjoyed the performance and were seen laughing away.

One of the highlights for the evening was the auction game where chips won by guests at the pre-dinner activities were pooled together to bit for prizes that the entire table could share. There were more fun and games to tickle everyone's funny bone and also for the staff to entertain their colleagues and peers for the evening.

After the final curtain call for the evening, everyone was elated and proceed to the rooftop bar for part two of the celebration party.

Happy New Year JTI and may 2014 be a great year for all!
